Camp KAN-DO and The Centre for Accessibility
Camp KAN-DO is a non-profit, charity located in The Interlake region of Manitoba. It is a facility for persons with disabilities to come and enjoy the outdoors in a fully accessible and safe environment, and to learn and enhance their independent living skills. Camp KAN-DO is the result of one person with a disability looking for a similar service and finding nothing available. There is no such facility in Canada that is able to support all disabilities like Camp KAN-DO. There are some facilities that will make concessions to people with disabilities for a short time during their open-seasons, but will not allow someone with multiple disabilities. This facility will be able to support over 200 clients each week with both outdoor and indoor activities. This will include Summer week-long camps, as well as Spring, Fall and Winter day usage. We will be able to support Special Olympic athletes and games with our athletic facilities. At Camp KAN-DO there is no age or ability limits - all are welcome and will be treated as unique as each client is.
Camp KAN-DO facilities include:
- cabins
- 40,000+ sq. ft. great hall with indoor pool
- soccer pitch with track
- baseball diamonds
- horses and riding compound
- petting zoo
- onsite lake for boating and fishing
- 400-seat amphitheatre
- eco-garden that will help to feed the clients
- multi-access play structure
- controlled pathways with audible/visual guideposts
- onsite staff including medical, maintenance and administrative staff.
At the facility our clients will be able to be themselves without any feelings of being out of place. The facility is open to all Canadians with any disability(ies) and their family. The entire site is designed and built with accessibility in mind. This site is barrier-free.
As our facility will be open 12-months per year, we will also be able to enjoy the site on warm winter days.
With all the amenities Camp KAN-DO has to offer to people from all ability levels, everyone will be able to come to the facility, and enjoy themselves, no matter how long or short their stay will be.
